about us
Derek and Brittany Weaver moved with their three (eventually five) boys and only daughter to the lower Yakima valley in the summer of 2010 immediately after family medicine residency to begin practice and life as a full-scope family medicine physician. Dr. Weaver has had a passion for the Spanish language and Latin-American culture since he served a church mission in 1997 in Guatemala. His medical training and education was focused primarily so that he could live in a rural community, speak Spanish, and deliver babies, and care for the young families that he helped to grow. His first 4 year of practice was in a clinic in Grandview while delivering babies in Sunnyside.
Dr. Weaver has always considered himself an independent person and in 2015 he was able to realize the final element of his dream and open a private practice in Sunnyside. This practice has allowed Dr. Weaver to continue to care for the needs of his English and Spanish speaking patients without the unnecessary and often intrusive aspects of corporate medicine. He frequently tells his patients that he works for them, not the hospital, the insurer, or any other entity.
In July 2015 Weaver Family Medicine became a reality and it seemed that there was plenty of need for primary care in the area as the practice grew in leaps and bounds. In 2016 with the tireless help of the staff, Weaver Family Medicine became a Rural Health Clinic which allowed Dr. Weaver to provide care for all patients in the Yakima valley. A Rural health Clinic is a state designated healthcare facility that subsidizes the care for all members of the community regardless of their ability to pay.
As the clinic continued to grow and the number of patients increased it became apparent that we would need to expand our clinic size and staff. We never imagined that the clinic family would grow so quickly. Many patients that Dr. Weaver had cared for prior to opening the clinic began to return to his care and he continued to care for the growing families of the valley.
Through the efforts of all of the Weaver Family Medicine team both past and present we have grown to be one of the largest and certainly fastest growing primary care clinics in the lower Yakima valley. In March 2020 when COVID-19 shut down much of the world, we at Weaver Family Medicine adopted a telehealth model literally overnight and never lost a step in caring safely for our diverse and growing patient population. Over the years we have had several fantastic MA's, receptionists, clinicians, and managers who have helped to grow our clinic family into what it is today. As we continue to expand our services, one thing remains the same as it was the day Dr. Weaver started practicing in the valley; our patients are our family, and we appreciate you, and continue to strive to serve you. If you are a current patient in our clinic, we say, "thank you," and if you would like to become a patient we say, "welcome to the family."
